What's New At Java

Java Post visits the University of Regina to get the "highest" degree.

On a beautiful fall day, the Java Post Aerial Photography flight crew was asked to take some aerial footage of the University of Regina main campus, located next to Wascana Lake in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Watch the video above for just a few of the many shots we captured that day from our customized DJI S900 hexacopter.

It happened to be very busy in the skies over the U. of R. that day, with several military helicopters and small aircraft passing over the campus, in-bound for the Regina International Airport. However, with an official NOTAM (notice to airmen) put in place with NAV CANADA and on-going radio contact with the Regina International Airport control tower, the Java Post Aerial Photography crew was able to conduct flight operations safely and efficiently.

Below are a few still images taken from our UAV camera.

Prior to takeoff, this highly creative shot showcases the feet of one of our two flight crew members. Probably every UAV aerial photographer has a few photos just like this. To the left of the frame you can see one of the orange safety cones that help warn curious onlookers to keep well away from the Java Post UAV launch/landing site.

And, just like the shot of the feet at the start of this web post, every UAV pilot has a few of these photos: "dronies" of the flight crew as the UAV comes in for a landing.

That's our primary certified UAV pilot, "Java Jack" Tunnicliffe on the left, and our aerial camera operator/UAV tech/second pilot Trevor Bennett on the right. In the lower mid-left of the photo you can see our less-than-high-tech launch/landing mat. The mat has a couple of practical uses: it gives our pilot a defined landing target, it indicates to onlookers a very specific area to keep clear, and it prevents the turbulence of the rotor-wash from throwing dirt or debris up into the UAV rotors when launching or landing.

With the landing gear now down on our customized DJI S900 hexacopter - one of several different UAVs belonging to the Java Post Aerial Photography squadron - a safe, soft landing is just moments away.
